James Cameron miraculously survived a lynching in 1930 at age 16.

He grew up to become a leader in the early Civil Rights Movement, a self-taught scholar, author, father of five and mentor of many.

In 1988 he founded America's Black Holocaust Museum. Dr. Cameron passed away in 2006 at the age of 92, still believing in the promise of America.

We continue his work by:

  • publishing Cameron's written works, including his autobiography, A Time of Terror: A Survivor's Story, and
  • facilitating education and dialogue in pursuit of racial healing.

You can help by

  • contributing to ABHM's development and programming on this page – or
  • contributing to our campaign to republish Dr. Cameron's memoir of his early life and lynching – and how he became better, not bitter.
