Choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess launched Moving Forward: Contemporary Asian American Dance Company as a non-profit modern dance company in 1992. The company recently rebranded to DTSB&Co. to reflect the vital artistic leadership of Dana Tai Soon Burgess. The company will celebrate its 20th Anniversary Season in 2012 with a year-long season of dance works, educational programs, and celebrations throughout the District and abroad.
Through its performances and educational programs, DTSB&Co. explores the common emotions felt by immigrant and emerging communities, therefore illuminating our multi-faceted American landscape. The company’s goal, by focusing on the immigrant experience, historic events and personal stories, is to bridge cultures and reduce ethnic barriers. DTSB&Co. is the only Asian American dance company of its stature nationally.
DTSB&Co.'s recent performances of Island and Charlie Chan and the Mystery of Love were named “Best of Dance 2009” and “Best of Dance 2010” respectively by The Washington Post, an honor no other local dance company has won two years in a row. Sarah Kaufman of The Washington Post named Dana Tai Soon Burgess the "poet laureate of Washington dance."
In 2009 we launched our youth outreach progam, which works with students from School Without Walls and engages them in group discussions, dance classes, trips to the Smithsonian, and interactive media projects. We were one of only five projects that were renewed for the second year in a row by the DC Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs.
