About MMAP

The Mural Music & Arts Project (MMAP) educates, empowers, and inspires youth through participation in the arts by offering engaging, year-round art programs in Bay Area. MMAP began in 2001 as the East Palo Alto Mural Art Project, employing local teens to design and create a mural for every school district in their city. Since then, MMAP has created a public art legacy while serving 12,591 youth and reaching 33,368 individuals through exhibits and performances.

MMAP programs explore urban art forms that appeal to young people including mural art, graffiti, Hip Hop music production, and dance. Powerful self-reflection and inspiration comes from learning our own communal, cultural, and personal histories; therefore, MMAP programs study the culture and history of the communities we serve. Toreflect on the community's evolving sense ofplace and increase civic engagement,

MMAP remains steadfast in its mission to impact youth and their communities by working collaboratively to offer myriad arts programs, including History through Hip Hop, Public Arts Consulting, Teen Mural Program, and professional development for faculty in public school artsprograms.

MMAP believes in the right of all children to have meaningful opportunities to grow and succeed. 98% of MMAP students are low-income youth of color. This demographic faces traditionally higher dropout rates and lower academic performance than that of their peers. The overwhelming majority of MMAP’s students suffer health disparities; 90% qualify for subsidized lunch to receive adequate nutrition. 54% of their parents have not earned a High School degree and are challenged with employment in today’s workforce. Additionally, 30%
of our students are homeless and/or foster youth. MMAP supports the economic viability of student artists from underserved communities by employing them to learn about and create public art and music.  In 2016, 56 youth & emerging community artists earned $69,237, trained 3,000 hours in MMAP’s workforce development program to build their capacity
