The East Palo Alto Senior Center has been operating programs and services for seniors since 1990. It is centrally located at 560 Bell Street (corner of University and Bell) in East Palo Alto. It is managed by the East Palo Alto Senior Center, Inc., (EPASC, Inc.) a non-profit organization lead by a community based volunteer Board of Directors and Executive Director. Seniors are always welcomed to participate and enjoy services and activities that foster independence, dignity, and enhance their quality of life.

Meals

The East Palo Alto Senior Center provides daily nutritious breakfasts, hot lunches, and weekly brown bag meals to seniors residing in East Palo Alto, especially seniors with low incomes. The City of East Palo Alto provides the lunch program.  EPASC, Inc. provides the breakfast program, with a continental breakfast each day. A hot “country” breakfast is offered each Thursday.  The Second Harvest Food Bank provides a Brown Bag program on Thursday which gives seniors fresh produce and food pantry items.

Health

Periodic Health Screenings for high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease are offered quarterly.  Exercise and physical activities include  a weekly Tai Chi class, strengthening programs, and bi-weekly line dancing.   Health related brochures and pamphlets (e.g. breast cancer diagnosis, prostate cancer detection) from local agencies are available at no cost to seniors,  and are maintained in the Center’s reception area.

Transportation

Seniors needing transportation from home to the Senior Center are provided free rides daily using a van and driver provided by the City of East Palo.  Transportation is also provided for field trips, and special outings or events. 

Classes

Weekly classes in sewing, knitting, arts and crafts, bible study, and Spanish are provided. Periodically, computer classes are offered in the “computer room” which has eight (8) work stations, access to a network printer, scanner, and copying equipment.

Recreation

For social and recreational activities, the Senior Center is an enjoyable place to meet friends daily, have nutritious meals, listen to music, or watch a cable accessed TV program. It is also a center which hosts various cultural celebrations, educational activities, and fundraising events to support the Center’s operations.
