Edu-Futuro transforms lives. . .
My name is Roxana Montaño. My family comes from Cochabamba, Bolivia. Edu-Futuro has had a great impact in my family. I first learned about this organization through my daughters’ school, Barrett Elementary. My husband and I took the PARTICIPA course, where we learned how to navigate the school system to advocate for the education of our children. That experience motivated me to take more leadership. Currently, I am an active volunteer parent at Barrett Elementary, I belong to the Hispanic Committee of Washington Lee High School, where my daughter Rebecca is a student, and I also serve in the ESOL/HILT Committee. My youngest daughter, Marisol, attended the Saturday classes at the Escuela Bolivia Program, which I find very valuable for helping our children maintain their Spanish and learn more about their cultural roots. My oldest son, Israel, was a volunteer and Edu-Futuro helped him find scholarships to attend the university. When he graduates, he wants to volunteer again teaching computer classes to parents in Edu-Futuro.

Last year, we served 58 youth, 223 children, 116 adults, and 272 parents through our education programs.
Children in our Escuela Bolivia Program build their inquiry and problem solving ability, for example, as they perform investigative work on the environmental impact of current events; 85% of students show progress in skills that are part of the Arlington County curriculum.
Youth in the Emerging Leaders Program report increased self-esteem, knowledge of the college application process, and are inspired to attend college after high school graduation. Of the students scheduled for graduation, 75% enroll in a higher education institution.
Parents in the Parent Leadership Initiative are empowered to be involved in their children’s education, gain the confidence to communicate with their children’s educators, and actively participate in school activities. A parent revealed, “I learned to share my ideas, to participate with the other parents in the group, and many things about how the schools work here.”
