Element 11 is Utah’s Officially Sanctioned Burning Man Regional Event. Element 11 is also a dynamic, year-round, active and thriving community whose mission is to ignite a sustainable culture of creativity and self-expression through art and based on the fundamental 10 principles of Burning Man. Element 11 has been organizing a community-produced art event in 1999. To support our mission, in 2011 our community formed a volunteer-supported 501(c)3 Non-Profit Organization known as Element 11, the same name as our annual outdoor arts festival. We are committed to producing a world-class event, as well as creating year-round fundraising opportunities, community training programs, social events, and service projects.
Element 11 is not your typical arts festival. In fact, it’s more of a temporary city, complete with a diverse community of artists, performers, musicians, and people like you and me. We have street addresses, a public works department, a kitchen to feed volunteers, and emergency and medical services departments. We also have theme camps that offer activities, art, or other experiences that are at the heart of the Element 11 event. These theme camps also create a visual presence and provide a communal space for activities that are open to everyone. In addition to theme camps, Element 11 also offers sound camps for music, workshops, performances, and live art. When the gates of the event open, the participants arrive, and over the course of the next five days, people come together to create the Element 11 experience. Participants of all ages can be found dancing, interacting with art installations, creating art, dressing in costumes, and sharing in the magic that is unique to the Element 11 experience. On the last day of the event, everything is packed up and nothing is left behind. This “leave no trace” idea is a fundamental part of the Element 11 experience.
Our event is structured and staffed by volunteers! These volunteers work assigned shifts before, during and after the event. Shifts include volunteering at the front gate and greeter stations, the info center, and the medical tent. Volunteers also organize “MOOP” (matter out of place) patrols throughout the event to clean up trash. Element 11 representatives (Board of Directors members) are on duty to coordinate and resolve issues 24 hours/day throughout the event. The Board of Directors works closely with our volunteer Rangers, who work in service of the safety and well-being of the Element 11 Community. Rangers act as non-confrontational community mediators, providers of reliable information, and facilitators of public safety. Rangers also coordinate with local law enforcement and fire departments or other responders when needed. Day or night, Rangers can be found all over the city engaging with the community, enjoying the art, and always ready to help sort things out.
We encourage all attendees of our event to stay and participate throughout the entire event. Element 11 is a camping event, and its participants practice “radical self-reliance” by coming prepared with food, water, shelter and other essential items for the event. Participants may camp in tents, vehicles, RVs or other temporary shade/weather structures.
For the first time in many years, we will be an all ages event. Element 11 is very excited to be able to have children at our event again. This year, there are opportunities for children to interact with the event, by creating their own art projects. This allows the children to have an incredible and experience and feel that they are a part of our extraordinary community.
