According to the adoption and Foster Care reporting System, in 2015 approximately 26,000 youths aged out of the foster-care system each year and are ill-equip to deal with life challenges. As a community, we need to discuss the issue of these young adults being placed into the world on their own without housing, financial assistance or emotional support. According to the Youth Aging of Foster Care, nearly 40% of young adults who age out of foster care ends up homeless, less than 3% will earn a college degree and more than 60% of young women will be pregnant by age 21.

Elex Children’s Haven, Inc., is a non-profit economic and social service corporation. ECH wants to change the mindset of our communities one by one. Our VISION is to essentially eradicate homelessness in young adults aging out of foster care. No youth should age out of foster care alone! We have discovered by providing these young adults with a place of resident, we will be saving about 40 young adults in my city alone in the next 5 years.

The organization also provides a three-tier life skills program during each participant stay. Certified professional life coaches, counselors, and mentors will be on hand to educate on decision-making, community involvement, and developing life skills. The program curriculum will address the young adults in peer support groups, short and long-term goal planning and develop healthy coping mechanism.
