Nationally 80 million boomers are redefining what aging, work and retirement are.   Locally, more than 1,500 boomers have benefited from Encore Tampa Bay since its inception in 2013.  This dynamic organization has created resources, developed pathways and built networks to explore and retool for meaningful paid work and volunteer service. At the same time, nonprofit organizations, businesses and the local economy have been strengthened by this vast pool of baby boomer experience.

The challenges we are addressing in our community:

  • A half million boomers in Tampa Bay are eager to stay engaged, and use their skills and talent in meaningful ways.
  • Most 50+ workers want to continue to work and earn income.
  • Over 70% of boomers have not saved enough for retirement and must continue to earn income well into their 60’s and 70’s.
  • Social challenges of our community are growing at a pace that outstrips the social sector’s ability to address these needs.
  • Hidden in plain sight are over 500,000 boomers in Tampa Bay who want to use their experience in the nonprofit sector- as a volunteer, a board member or paid employee.  Many don't know where to start.

 WHO IS ENCORE TAMPA BAY?

Encore Tampa Bay started in 2013 in response to a National Social change movement where 80 million boomers are redefining what aging, work and retirement was going to be in the second half of life.  Leading this effort is Bevan Rogel, who was selected as one of 12 individuals nationally to build an encore community in her hometown of Tampa Bay.  Recognizing that boomers offer significant expertise and talents, the community has responded to this national social change movement and Encore Tampa Bay is now the primary advocate, communicator, convener and connector for boomers.

As a nonprofit initiative under the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, and recognized as part of the national Encore Movement, Encore Tampa Bay helps Baby Boomers understand this exciting new stage of life development where anything is possible. All we need to do is be open and find our passion and purpose.

 WHAT DO WE DO?

We create resources, develop pathways and build networks, and we help connect talented adults to the organizations that need them.

  • In 2016, we offered 17 workshops; presented to 34 community /business groups; held three Opportunity Fairs reaching more than 175; and developed a network of 20 organizations ready to assist boomers to retool for work or volunteer service.
  • Encore Connect, a community event that drew over 300, educated attendees on ways to find the perfect job and connected them to resources.
  • Encore Tampa Bay was a key partner in an AARP pilot program -- Caregiver Accelerator, giving much needed guidance and encouragement to caregivers with ideas to make caregiving easier.
  • Encore’s online Job/Volunteer Opportunity Board was launched.
