Dysleixa causes an estimated 15% of Utah students to perform under their potential. Children with dyslexia require alternative learning strategies. The current school systems do not offer alternative, specialized methods of instruction, resulting in 15% of Utah students being left behind. Howe we help: The Dyslexia Center of Utah provides multi-sensory, sequential, research-based instruction in a positive & emotionally safe environment to give children with dyslexia a foundation of success for a lifetime.
1. WHO WE ARE
Dyslexia Center of Utah services 141 dyslexic children along the Wasatch Front in five locations. The director is the leading authority of dyslexia in the state.
Our vision is to help every dyslexic child learn to read regardless of ability to pay for specialized, research-based instruction.
2. WHY WE CARE
Dyslexic children cannot learn to read in a traditional school setting. They must be taught in multi-sensory, proven research-based instruction.
Dyslexic children have a language processing disorder that prohibits proper brain recall (for the sound of letters ), mind processing abilities, comprehension, reading, vocabulary, grammar and math, despite very high IQ levels and extremely high talents in creative arts and problem solving.
3. THE PROBLEMS
Undiagnosed and untreated dyslexia causes hopelessness in children; youth which are teased & bullied, and illiterate young adults--forming an environment for unemployment and crime.
“A child would rather be known as the ‘bad’ kid rather than the dumb or lazy kid.”
Public schools and districts refuse to recognize dyslexia, as they would then be required to provide testing, diagnosis and intervention services, which schools are not funded, equipped or trained to do.
The cost of specialized tutoring can be difficult for families--up to $275 per month. And since dyslexia is genetic, many families have more than one dyslexic child.
4. OUR GOALS
Keep center costs down to help families from financial burdens.
Raise funds to provide full & partial scholarships for children who cannot otherwise afford services.
Raise state-wide awareness of dyslexia & the need for screening & intervention in kindergartens.
5. CALL TO ACTION
Help provide one of 85 partial, one-year, or full scholarships to reduce financial burdens on families.
Advocate the need for dyslexia screenings in the public school systems.
Donate for free community dyslexia screenings, reduced formal testing fees, and funding to train school teachers to recognize signs of dyslexia for quick intervention.
