We're on a mission to help all New Mexicans connect with nature, understand sustainability issues, protect our natural heritage and make informed decisions that lead to a thriving economy and healthy environment. We work to support educators, build partnerships and increase environmental literacy in our communities.

Since 1991, the Environmental Education Association of New Mexico (EEANM) has been providing, promoting and enhancing quality environmental education by providing New Mexicans opportunities for professional development, communication and partnership. We are one of 54 affiliates of the North American Association for Environmental Education.

Why is Environmental Education Important?

Our children spend more time indoors than ever before. They are disconnected from nature and the joy that comes from exploring their community. The effects of “nature deficit disorder” are reflected in increasing child obesity rates and declining academic scores. Environmental education can reverse these trends.

Environmental education helps learners understand how nature works and how humans impact our world. EE is hands-on, interdisciplinary, empowering, and relevant to learners’ everyday lives. It gives them the knowledge and tools they need to be environmentally literate–ready to face environmental and social challenges with confidence and optimism.

EEANM supports the educators who inspire, inform, and teach people about their world wherever they live, whatever their age, and whatever their interests.

Who Are We?

The members of EEANM and our sister affiliates are environmental education professionals in STEM, government, higher education, K–12 education, nonformal education, early childhood education, science education and business, and many other sectors.
