It is estimated that one in four children need corrective lenses. EyeCare4Kids Nevada exists to meet that need by providing professional eyecare to low-income, visually impaired children and underserved families. The organization provides vision screenings, comprehensive eye exams and eyeglasses at little to no charge. In addition to two school-based clinics, there is also a mobile vision clinic, affectionately referred to as SeeMore, which visits a different Title 1 school within the Clark County School District each day.

EyeCare4Kids is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization established for the exclusive purpose of promoting good vision and literacy. A Board-certified optician, EyeCare4Kids was founded in 2001 by Joseph G. Carbone, with his wife, Jan Carbone, and the late Dee W. Hadley, to provide vision screening, eye exams and eyeglasses for youth whose parents do not have the resources to pay. With four decades of professional experience, Joseph knows all too well that many children go without eye care because they are uninsured, underinsured or the expense is burdensome for families struggling to sustain basic needs. He ran a downtown Salt Lake City (UT) practice called The Eye Doctor from 1978-2006 and, at a routine appointment 23 years ago, a young boy tried on his first new pair of glasses, paid for by an anonymous benefactor. The boy’s response sparked the launch of EyeCare4Kids…he immediately began to cry and laugh at the same time as he looked out the window, saying, “Wow, I didn’t know that trees had leaves.” The Carbone’s took out a second mortgage on their home and, through the generosity of a wonderful community of supporters, began EyeCare4 Kids. With clinics in Utah, Southern Nevada and Phoenix, Arizona, as well as international humanitarian trips, EyeCare4Kids has currently served over 400,000 patients over the past 23 years.

EyeCare4Kids expanded to Southern Nevada in 2012, opening three School-Based Clinics (Harold Brinley Middle School, Grant Sawyer Middle School, and Robert L. Taylor Elementary School) and a Mobile Vision Clinic, which started in 2014, which is booked five days a week throughout the school year. The Sawyer Clinic was closed in 2020 in order to give the school more space for their students and EyeCare4Kids is now launching a second mobile program called Eyes On The Road Nevada. This program will allow us to expand our ability to bring vital vision care into schools and neighborhoods with traditionally high need and challenges in accessing resources.

Demographics for the 2023-2024 academic year:

  • EyeCare4Kids NV served a total of 6,805 CCSD students
  • 5,173 students received eyeglasses
  • 4,083 students were seen on the Mobile Vision Clinic
