Family Freeride

Family FreeRide’s mission is to get kids and communities on bikes. We’ve been accomplishing our mission in Fair Oaks since 2019 by hosting weekly and monthly group rides, offering free bike skills clinics, and putting on annual Bike Festivals. We discovered in 2019 that the key to our mission’s success was to have a fun safe place for our kids to ride. We began an effort to improve, maintain and expand the Fair Oaks Bike Park and have been making significant improvements to it every year. Like any sport, kids need a ‘practice field’ to grow their skills, where they can be contained and entertained while learning the skills needed for their sport.

Along with developing the Fair Oaks Bike Park, Family FreeRide has been helping advocate for bike park development in other areas around Sacramento including Sac County, Carmichael, Orangevale, Folsom, Davis, Rocklin, the Bay Area, Southern California, and Wallowa Oregon. Many communities are interested in building their own bike parks, however, since there are no set dimensions or blueprints like there are for other sports fields, it can be challenging to decide what features to include. The goal of building a successful bike park should be to create something that fulfills the needs of the user group it is intended for. Family FreeRide is looking forward to collaborating with other communities to help develop the best options for the bicycle community. 

Riding a bike is many things to many people - an environmentally friendly mode of transportation, a sport with categories that go from extreme adrenaline to extreme endurance. It’s also a casual form of recreation and exercise for all ages and ability levels that improves mental and physical health. Family FreeRide believes the world would be a better place if everyone rode bikes more often, and this will happen with well built bike parks that allow the development of the community.
