Domestic Violence is a systematic pattern of power and control perpetrated by one intimate partner against another.

 

Many of our clients have attempted to tell their loved ones what was happening to them. Too often they hear:

 

"You're exaggerating for attention."

  "I know your partner. They wouldn't do that. Stop lying."

     "We don't believe in divorce. Work it out."

       "If you would just do what they wanted you wouldn't get hit so much."

 

Victims hear the threats. They feel the abuse. They fear what will happen if they stay, but they are terrified of what could happen if they try to go. Abusers seek power and control over their Victim. If they feel that control is slipping away they can become incredibly dangerous, unpredictable, and lethal.

Family Guidance Center runs the First Step Domestic Violence Program in Hickory, NC. We work with individuals who live and work around Catawba County. These services teach our community how to recognize abusive relationships and how to get out safely. Without support, many Victims do not have the resources or education to safely leave an abusive relationship.

Our mission is Maintain, Restore, and Improve the Quality of Life of Individuals and Families through Counseling, Education, and Support. We want to build a community with strong families in which children thrive in stable, loving, and safe homes.
