Q: What makes Family Involvement Center (FIC) unique?

A: At FIC parents work with and learn from trained professionals who are also parents of children with special needs. Working with someone who understands the challenges they face gives parents hope as well as the guidance they need to successfully manage their child's and family's needs.

Founded in 2002, by Jane Kallal, a parent and leading advocate for parents and caregivers, Family Involvement Center (FIC) is nationally recognized for its expertise in the delivery of family support and family leadership programs.  Jane believed then, as she does today, that parents know their children best. It was with this basic understanding that Jane realized she and other parents could offer a different kind of support and assistance to families living a reality similar to their own - one designed to strengthen and empower families and to help their children succeed. By employing parents with similar “lived” experiences to support other parents raising children with emotional, physical and behavioral health challenges, FIC understood the unique power of this peer support model and its effectiveness in fostering parent confidence and resiliency in meeting the complex needs of their children and families.   This however, was only the beginning. Through Jane’s visionary efforts, Family Involvement Center simultaneously helped foster a national model of family involvement, peer parent support, and parent/youth leadership that continues to transform current systems of physical and behavioral health care and improve child and family outcomes throughout our community and beyond.

Today, FIC offers a variety of parent education, training, and support services to parents and community professionals alike.  These include:

  • Parent-to-Parent Support
  • Youth Mentoring
  • Parent Assistance (In Person or Via Phone)
  • Parent Education & Training
  • Life Skills Education for Youth
  • Bilingual Parent Empowerment Support Groups
  • Family Life Coaching
  • Educational Advocacy
  • Individual & Family Counseling
  • Training & Technical Assistance
  • Youth & Family Leadership Opportunities
  • Information & Referral

Working in partnership with families, FIC increases parent self-efficacy through education and training and helps reduce parent isolation and/or stigma associated with raising a child or youth with emotional, physical or behavioral health challenges.  Our impact is measured by our efforts in four main areas:

Empowering Parents through knowledge, training and parent-to-parent supportive services

Strengthening Youth to become confident, resilient young adults

Educating Communities on parent-to-parent support, mental illness and disease prevention

Connecting Families with informal and formal support systems within their communities

Parents Helping Parents:  It is who we are and what we do.
