$10,000 Goal

We are seeking $10,000 in funding that we can channel toward the needs of our partner food pantries in the New River Valley.

The mission of Feeding Southwest Virginia is to nourish neighbors, engage our community partners, and develop solutions to address food insecurity. The backbone of our entire effort is composed of a network of approximately 400 food pantries and feeding programs that receive food from our food bank. In other words, we are the orchard through which our Southwest Virginia pantries pick their oranges. We take this privilege seriously and squeeze as much juice from our resources as possible to ensure each pantry is successful. That includes providing training, oversight, and materials/equipment when needed. Most recently, it also includes our participation in an initiative known as the Healthy Pantry Initiative. Through this initiative, we are seeking to provide the resources our pantries need to vastly improve the nutritional quality of their services.

Many of the food pantries in Southwest Virginia are lean “mom-and-pop” operations that are conducted by unpaid volunteers. A generous portion of their limited funding is used to source food and keep the lights on. As a result, it can be challenging for our pantries to make much-needed renovations or to acquire new equipment. That is where the Healthy Pantry Initiative steps in. When a pantry lets us know that they would like to do more, but are too funding-constricted, we seek to provide those resources. For example, a shelf-stable-only pantry may find value in being able to provide fresh produce and refrigerated or frozen meat products but cannot afford the equipment needed. The Healthy Pantry Initiative would provide the refrigeration.

All proceeds from GiveLocalNRV will support the Healthy Pantry Initiative and will be distributed to our partner food pantries operating in the New River Valley. Please see the list of potential recipients below.
