The Ferry County Historical Society was founded in 1963 with the purpose of preserving, promoting and educating the public in the early history and culture of the region which is primarily Ferry County, Washington. It is also responsible for the safekeeping and perpetuation of the collection of historical and cultural artifacts and implements of the early households and industries significant to the area. We currently have a small museum in the Whitaker-Fletcher Building which is open four days per week from Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend. The Kaufman Cabin located behind the Whitaker-Fletcher House, is the oldest surviving building in Republic, left from 1896 and it provides a look at life in a late 19th century mining camp. The cabin is open for viewing on the same days the museum is open. We also have the J. W. and Elizabeth Slagle House which was built in the early 1900's, purchased by the Slagle Family in 1906 and gifted to FCHS in 2011. It is open for limited tours during the summer months. Visitors are delighted to see how the family furnished their home in the early 1940's. The Slagle family were early residents of Republic and were a large force in making Republic what it is today. We are very proud to say that the Slagle House and Barn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
