Our Story

Finding A Foothold Foundation was created from a simple truth: falls that change an older adult’s life forever are preventable. While working as an occupational therapist for 30 years, our founder, Consuela Marshall, OT, CDP, CAPS, CHAT, witnessed firsthand how one unexpected fall can rob an older adult of independence and place an enormous emotional and financial burden on the entire family. Many of these falls result in serious injury, long-term disability, or even death—and often lead to the heartbreaking loss of the ability to remain safely in one’s home. Life is changed forever.

In many underserved communities, fall-prevention information, safety guidance, and home modification options are not always presented in culturally relevant, accessible, or practical ways that meet families where they are. Older adults often don’t receive timely guidance, and although families have concerns, meaningful education and training are rarely offered until after a serious injury has already occurred.

 We exist to change that.

Our Mission

Our mission is to empower older adults and family caregivers with practical fall-prevention education, culturally relevant training, and supportive resources that enhance safety, strengthen independence, and help individuals remain in their homes and communities for as long as possible.

We focus especially on underserved communities in the Baton Rouge Metropolitan area, where access to clear, timely guidance is often limited or not presented in ways that meet families where they are. We believe every older adult deserves the opportunity to age with dignity, confidence, and support.

What We Do

Fall-prevention education is rarely accessible to underserved communities. Many older adults and caregivers don’t know where to find information that fits their lifestyle, their culture, or the realities of their everyday lives. That’s why we bring fall-prevention education directly into neighborhoods—

What We Offer

  • Community Workshops in churches, senior centers, libraries, senior housing, and other hosting sites..

  • Virtual Workshops for adults and caregivers unable to attend in person.

  • Caregiver Safety Training focused on safe techniques, burnout, and injury prevention.

  • Community Outreach at neighborhood events and resource fairs.

  • Home Safety Evaluation

Why It Matters

For many older adults, a single fall can mark the beginning of a permanent loss of independence.
