Flagstaff Shelter Services opened its doors for the first time seven years ago, thanks to the hard work of dedicated community members who were determined to bring an end to the deaths of the homeless in Flagstaff and surrounding communities due to exposure to our harsh winter nights.  Since that time we have provided over 22,000 bed nights to nearly 1,500 different individuals. On an annual basis, we serve well over 500 individuals.  We believe the reduction in exposure-related deaths in Flagstaff during the past few years is due in part to our shelter being open and available to the at-risk community.

Last winter we extended our overnight services to include women. During that first week a 92 year old woman and her son came seeking a place to stay at the shelter. The woman was the victim of the recent housing market collapse and had lost her home in foreclosure. She is 92 years old and deaf. She stayed with us for six weeks until she was transferred to the Peaks by a social worker.

Flagstaff Shelter Services’ mission is to save and change the lives of homeless individuals in Northern Arizona by offering them shelter and pathways into lives of dignity that benefit the community.  Our primary focus is on the most critical group of homeless in Northern Arizona, those who have serious psychiatric disabilities, substance abuse issues, or are chronically homeless.  Our vision is that all homeless people in northern Arizona have safe housing, good nutrition and health, and a productive life.  Flagstaff Shelter Services provides the critical first step in the continuum of care to the most vulnerable homeless people, providing safe shelter and a path to a fulfilling life.
