The Mission of Flamenco Fever is to create a sustainable Performing Arts community in Dallas equal to other cities of our size and preserve the legacy of Latinx art and culture in the rapidly gentrifying neighborhoods of Dallas Ft Worth Metroplex and especially Oak Cliff, where it is based, through high-quality educational activities in the Dallas area and performances throughout Texas. Through creative and resourceful programming, we are reaching underserved neighborhoods with our belief that all should have access to participate, learn, and reap the mental, physical, and spiritual rewards that music and dance provide.
Flamenco is a bold and elegant fusion of singing, dancing, and music that has been passed down from generation to generation since the fifteenth century. This complex genre of music from Andalucia, or Southern Spain, is the result of an interchange of musical styles, culture, and folklore between the Roma people (known as gitanos in Spain) Castilians, Moors, and Sephardic Jews. During the Spanish Inquisition they used flamenco to soothe their souls during unimaginable political oppression. People today are still moved by these cathartic and emotionally charged artform
The mission of Flamenco Fever is to create and sustain a flamenco community similar to other major cities, in Dallas, through high quality educational activities and public performances, so residents of high need neighborhoods of the City can learn about, participate in, have regular access to and enjoy this important legacy of Latinx art and culture. Flamenco Fever brings the art form out of the theater and makes it accessible to everyone, with almost 100 shows a year and subsidized classes and workshops. Flamenco is a real delicacy so expensive to produce, it is often only seen in exclusive theaters that only certain demographics can afford. This is ironic and unfortunate, in that an art form the downtrodden have used for centuries to work through oppression, has been put into venues where the people who need it the most, cannot afford to see it or participate.
The Texas Flamenco Festival spans the entire month of October with events across the state. Each event highlights the mesmerizing musical and dance arts of Southern Spain. Producer Julia Alcantara boasts 25 year career in top quality flamenco productions and her non profit Flamenco Fever is at the helm of this incredible line up.
