Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project

A nonprofit organization

The FLANBWAYAN HAITIAN LITERACY PROJECT began when Darnell Benoit, an Adult ESL (English as a Second Language) Teacher, identified a glaring lack of support for young Haitian immigrants seeking a fruitful education in New York. As an immigrant student herself in the late 80s, she was regularly confronted with racism, apathy, and ignorance while striving toward her academic goals. No path had been laid for her or other young Haitians; over time, she decided to rectify that.

This year is the FLAMBWAYAN HAITIAN LITERACY PROJECT's 20th Anniversary.
Yet, it is not a time to lean back and rest.  In 2024, US immigrants are facing deeply uncertain times, and there are simply more immigrant youth, who desperately need our support. We will face all oncoming challenges alongside our young Haitians.  The Flanbwayan tree takes root in the poor soil of adversity and still grows strong, healthy, and radiant. We are honored and privileged to help our students do the same.

Help us in the fight for immigrant education, and support immigrant youth!!
