Each year on Mother’s Day, we show our love to the mothers in our lives. But sadly, the cookie cutter cards in the drug store often exclude the many mamas in our communities who work hard to support their families, including mamas of color, immigrant mamas, queer mamas, transgender and gender nonconforming mamas, and mamas who are incarcerated.  

By making our mamas and families invisible, one of the biggest commercial holidays in the U.S. reinforces outdated notions of motherhood and families that don’t represent our reality.  

Like you, we know that mamahood is not one-size-fits all. We believe that all mamas deserve to be seen and celebrated in images that reflect all the ways our families look. 

That’s why we started Mamas Day. For the past five years, we’ve partnered with artists to create beautiful, original art that reflect the various ways our mamas and families look. And year after year, it is the most powerful vehicle we have for transforming the way we think, feel, and act in support of mamas. 

It’s no wonder: Art touches peoples’ hearts and minds in magical ways.

But art isn’t free—and we don’t think it should be.  We fiercely believe in fair compensation for the talented artists who create Mamas Day images, in recognition of the critical role they play in igniting social change. 

This year, we spent nearly $8,000 on stipends for 5 incredibly visionary artists.  And we spent much more to make sure that the cards reach the communities who need it most.
