Foundation for the Advancement of Music & Education Inc

FAME is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to providing equal access to all children and young adults, regardless of social and economic need, to quality music and music education as part of their lifelong journey to adulthood. We believe that the power of music which is a key factor to a well-rounded character, will produce a new generation of leaders for our nation. We further believe that equity in the arts is vital to building strong communities.

Founded in 2004, The Foundation for the Advancement of Music and Education, Inc. seeks out and creates opportunities for these talented young people to positively express culture through musicianship, vocals, visual art, humanities, and performance theatre.

Our programs and activities also support families who have been adversely affected by the ongoing economic crises; and fill the void where in-school and after-school cultural arts programs have been drastically reduced. Our goals are to increase students’ enthusiasm for learning and academic levels, reduce the dropout rate of at risk and low income youth and provide exposure outside community walls.

Some of our programs and activities include:

• Master Classes, workshops, and seminars to elevate vocal and instrumentation technique and promote higher education

• Support to school music departments and students participating in school concert band, marching band and choir;

• After School Jazz Band –instruction based on a rigorous curriculum that includes rehearsal, study and public performance. This program provides a safe haven during the most vulnerable hours of the day – after school. The band is supported by visiting instructors (professional musicians, teachers and recording artists).

• Family Literacy - Furthering our mission to increase literacy and include families, FAME sponsor book readings and musical theatre experiences which expose children and their families to art enriches the landscape of our community.

• Music Technology Camp (held at the University of Maryland School of Music) - Students learn to compose music using industry standard software and state of the art hardware; and obtain skills for employment and advanced placement in college and trade/specialty schools.

• Sat & Reading - Support provided to students struggling to reach acceptable SAT scores or need to improve reading skills. Our partner is Innovative Study Techniques.

• Spelling Bees – FAME is the proud sponsor of two spelling bees: The Gazette Spelling Bee & the NBC/Washington Informer Spelling Bee. • Happy Hearts - Our latest outreach component is composed of music activities designed for children living in a homeless shelter.

• Bridging the Musical Spectrum, designed and produced at area colleges and other venues to educate families and members of the community at large on the importance of music and cultural arts in the lives of our youth and to advocate for cultural arts education. At these events we provide outlets for youth and organizations to showcase their talent.
