Listen to the mustn'ts, child. Listen to the don'ts. Listen to the shouldn'ts, the impossibles, the won'ts. Listen to the never haves, then listen close to me... Anything can happen, child. Anything can be. Shel Silverstein
FOUNDATION OF JOY MISSION
We create art---film, photography, mixed media, music, theater, and literature to raise funds and awareness of current issues many children must face and endure: homelessness, hunger, climate change, racial equality, gender equality, LGBTQ equality, mental health, trafficking, aging out of foster care, education, healthcare. We also work for women's healthcare and human rights. The art not only educates, the funds go back to the nonprofits with whom we work; the nonprofits doing the daily work to help children thrive. We tell their stories, and the stories of why they are needed. These stories not only raise more funds and awareness of these issues, the art is created by artist mentors working with young adults and children. We incorporate service work with those nonprofits, in how we create the art, so it's a win-win for all! The kids are a part of the artistic process. Art spreads joy!
We need our Arts to teach us how to breathe. Ray Bradbury
We have started filming the Anthology on Child Wellness and Poverty in America: True Stories and Solutions told through Cinema, Music, and the Work of Nonprofits. Foundation of Joy is producing this anthology of short films addressing some of the most pressing child welfare issues in this country.
Foundation of Joy believes in the power of art to raise awareness for the welfare, education and artistic development of children and young adults. It's an investment in a better future, and a legacy of the work that has been done by those who have come before us.
Award winning filmmakers will work alongside students and nonprofits to tell the stories affecting our nation’s children. Proceeds from the film go back to the nonprofits who work daily and tirelessly to help solve these problems. We have started shooting, and are urgently and actively fundraising to continue.
A child going to school hungry, more worried about her next meal not the math problem in front of her. A young 18-year-old girl transitioning out of foster care with talent and potential, but without support, now facing homelessness. A young preteen, gifted and talented, and considering suicide because of bullying, connects to the brave young girl who escapes trafficking and child prostitution to go to law school because of the nonprofit who believed in her, meets the teacher who works every day with few supplies to teach students arts and sciences to give them and the future, some hope.
There are people who hold the threads of society together: teachers, social workers, nurses, volunteers, and so many more. We are telling true stories on the work they do, the people who they help, and solutions to these issues. What sets this film apart: we collaborate with mentor artists who work with children and young adults in the creative process of making these films with 1.) Interviews with nonprofits, the devoted staff and volunteers on the issues themselves 2.) Giving the youth the tools-- cameras and equipment to capture their stories and work with award winning directors/editors mentoring them 3.) Young musicians will work with mentors/music teachers in creating the score. We have award winning filmmakers on board, who will work with the students, as well as respected nonprofits. A sample of nonprofits we have met with and started our work: Lonely Instruments for Needy Kids, Hope Kids, Grove of Hope, Groundswell international, and several partners with Feeding America are on board, and we have begun working with them on telling these stories, working with children in this process, and exploring solutions with the experts in these nonprofits.
We have attached established filmmakers and musicians to helm the anthology: a film director who has won a Telly Award, and was short listed for an Academy Award on her first film, also a winner at Sundance, she was part of a Pulitzer Prize winning team on a New York Times piece, and another director with a Cannes official selection film, which has garnered awards. We need your help to continue this endeavor in cinema, music, and the nonprofit community.
Foundation of Joy is a nonprofit I started in my younger sister, Elizabeth Joy's memory. She helped me build and create Red Love Film, a for-profit film company. She wrote the business plan which became her thesis. She was a few months away from completing her MBA when she died. We had created a philanthropic branch in the company where we leave the place we shoot a little better and work with local profits. She died in pregnancy wanting to be a mother and also wanting a life in art, so in her beautiful memory and honor and in the memory of her twins, I took what we created in that philanthropic branch of Red Love Film, and created Foundation of Joy 501 C3.
Foundation of Joy is a 501(c) (3) organization made up of a group of artists and experienced social advocates dedicated to raising awareness and problem solving for contemporary social issues.
