Last year we finished construction of a free, public, ADA-accessible kayak launch for Four Mile Run Park. It was a huge endeavor for a small organization, but it is done! Now that an accessible facility is in place, we are asking for your support for an adaptive paddling program, providing the necessary training and adaptive equipment -- seat and paddle modifications, outriggers, etc -- that make kayaking possible for individuals with disabilities. In partnership with Pursuit Adaptive Sports and Recreation, we will establish Alexandria's first outdoor adaptive paddling program at Four Mile Run.
As we celebrate the Four Mile Run Conservancy's tenth anniversary this year, we look back with pride on a strong track record of engaging the community in stewardship and enjoyment of our nearby nature. Our ongoing work includes:
Volunteer opportunities: land- and kayak-based litter clean-ups, tree and wetland restoration plantings, invasive plant removal, and more
Paid summer conservation internships: high-school and college age youth gain experience in plant and wildlife surveys, invasive plant removal, resource mapping, water quality testing, and assistance with outdoor programs
Nature Explorers And Restorers (NEAR) programs: outdoor experiences such as kayaking, orienteering, birding, and nature exploration for Arlandria-Chirilagua children/youth and scouting programs
Interpretive events: nature walks, local history walks, pop-up nature center, etc
The Four Mile Run Conservancy envisions lower Four Mile Run as a cherished community resource and a model for natural lands stewardship in an urban setting. Our mission is to promote nature, culture, and community at lower Four Mile Run through restoration, advocacy, recreation, and education.
