The Franklin County Mentor Volunteer Program is a non-profit organization that aims to give children the encouragement they need to let them know they are valued as a person and help them reach their full potential by giving them a positive role model of a mentor. Children raised in poverty or abused are at a greater risk of participating in at-risk behaviors such as drug use, unprotected sex, and criminal behavior. These at-risk behaviors can lead to teen pregnancy, high school dropouts, and sometimes incarceration. However, many at-risk students with mentors show improvements in school attendance, academic performance, participation in class, consideration for others, and attitude.
Franklin County is a rural county with a high rate of children living with a single parent or with lower-income grandparents. Low-income students usually don’t have support and encouragement at home. Our mentors visit with the students they are matched with once a week. With one-on-one contact each week, students have someone to talk to and an adult who thinks the student is important enough to come to see them each week.
