Community Made This Park—Community Keeps It Alive

Freedom Park is one of Camano Island’s greatest community success stories—built not by government funding, but by neighbors, families, artists, and volunteers who envisioned something special. The land that became Freedom Park was generously donated by Brown & Cole, transforming an empty lot at the north entrance of Camano Island into the welcoming gateway our community knows today. From the very beginning, the vision was clear: create a space that reflects Camano’s creativity, history, and spirit of togetherness.

What followed was pure grassroots magic. Through donations both big and small, volunteer work parties, local businesses, and over a thousand helping hands, the land was shaped into a vibrant park with open green space, walking paths, public art, and a beloved children’s playground. The park continued to grow, adding inspiring sculpture installations and the Gateway Gallery that shines a spotlight on local artists. Most importantly, Freedom Park became home to Washington’s only memorial dedicated to Pearl Harbor Survivors—making this small island park part of both local and national history.

Today, the Freedom Park Association—an all-volunteer nonprofit—works year-round to preserve and enhance this one-of-a-kind public space. The park receives no state or county funding. Every garden tended, every sculpture installed, every repaired fence and playground board is made possible by community donations and volunteer hours. Freedom Park is proof of what a community can create—and sustain—when people come together.

Your support keeps Freedom Park beautiful, welcoming, and alive with art, play, history, and community spirit. A gift to Freedom Park is a gift to every family who plays here, every visitor who stops to reflect, and every child who grows up knowing this space as part of home.
