Friends of Cedar Mesa

From Grand Gulch to the San Juan River and Valley of the Gods to the Comb Ridge, the Greater Cedar Mesa Area is truly a special place. As a Friend of our organization, you’ve no doubt experienced many special moments inspired by the beauty, solitude and history of this corner of the Colorado Plateau.

That’s why we’re writing to ask you to consider a donation to help us with the work ahead. You’ll know a contribution to a 501 (c3) non-profit, such as Friends of Cedar Mesa is likely deductible on your taxes.  But we won’t leave it to Uncle Sam’s deadline to motivate you to make a contribution. 

This year is likely to be a pivotal one for the future of Cedar Mesa. Never before has there been so much momentum behind some sort of designation, such as a National Conservation Area or Monument, to help protect this area. Interior Secretary Sally Jewel recently elevated the stakes by saying, “The President will not hesitate. I can tell you that there are places that are ripe for setting aside . . .”

Secretary Jewell’s comments have breathed new life into discussions initiated by Utah Congressman Rob Bishop, seeking to find common ground on wilderness issues. Friends of Cedar Mesa is actively involved in that process, as well as in educating San Juan County officials of the value of protecting this international treasure.  

Of course, all the challenges on the ground impacting Cedar Mesa continue to require our constant diligence. Educating visitors, monitoring overgrazing, protecting cultural resources,  combating illegal roads, and inspiring conservation all require more work and more energy than ever.
