Our Story

We originally formed in 1996 to support Maybury State Park through volunteerism and financial assistance with corporate grants, donations, and membership dues.   Our support and hard work can be found all over the park.  We work side by side with Maybury State Park staff to create an enjoyable and safe environment for all visitors.  The Friends of Maybury State Park work in a volunteer capacity to:

  • --  Host hikes, nature programs, and special events
  • --  Improve facilities such as the winter enclosures for the concession
  •       building and ball diamond
  • --  Conducting volunteer workdays:  trails maintenance, building new
  •       boardwalks, raising trail beds, eliminating erosion issues, etc
  • --  Improve natural areas by removing invasives, such as garlic mustard
  • --  Encourage volunteerism by having open monthly meetings and
  •       partnering with other groups
  • --  Serve in many ways to enhance the recreation opportunities at
  •      Maybury State Park for the enjoyment of all guest

Over the past 19 years, we have used our resources wisely and focused on important projects such as hiking trail improvements, trail markers, history and nature hike plaques, and more. Look for our logo or signs on our projects in the park.  We have been able to secure grants between $500 and $10,000 which all go directly to park improvements.  Donations and membership dues are also directed to the Park.   The Friends of Maybury do not have any paid employees and minimal overhead costs (less than 6% of our annual budget). In 2013, our overhead was about $600 for office supplies, insurance and non-profit renewal fees. We directed all other funds ($10,600) directly toward Park projects and events.
