Friends of Minidoka INC

A nonprofit organization

$515 raised by 14 donors

The Friends of Minidoka engages in and supports education, research and historic preservation of the WWII incarceration experience. We strive to pass on the history, legacy, and lessons of civil liberties through transforming and inspiring experiences for the general public and those with personal and familial ties to Minidoka. We are committed to working with partners, including the National Park Service, to accomplish these goals.

Minidoka National Historic Site was established in 2001 to preserve the site and educate the public about the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. Since we were established in 2003, Friends of Minidoka has been committed to supporting the development of Minidoka National Historic Site and in protecting and sharing the legacy of the 14,000 Japanese Americans who were unconstitutionally taken from their homes and confined on the basis of their race. We believe this story has important and relevant ramifications in today's world, and strive to keep these lessons in civil liberties in the forefront of our community.

Some of our accomplishments include:

Supporting the Minidoka Pilgrimage.

Cosponsoring the Minidoka Civil Liberties Symposium.

Securing a grant and matching funds for and managing the historic reconstruction of the Minidoka Honor Roll.

Securing a grant and matching funds for and managing the historic reconstruction of the entrance Guard Tower.

Collaborating with the Conservation Fund to purchase land to expand the Mindidoka National Historic Site, including residential Block 22 and the site of a 1952 Farm-In-A-Day.

Assisting the National Park Service in locating 22 original barracks to relocate back to Minidoka.

Supporting efforts to add the Bainbridge Island Japanese Exclusion Memorial as a satellite site of Minidoka.

Reprinting the Minidoka Interlude, the historic camp annual.

Supporting Day-of-Remembrance events in Idaho, Washington, and Oregon.

Fought the Confined Animal Feedlot, which threatens Minidoka's historic integrity and visitor use, through several legal challenges.

We have been an all-volunteer, membership driven organization until this March, when we hired our first part-time executive director. Your contributions, no matter how small, help make a huge difference in what we are able to accomplish! Take a stand for civil liberties, and pledge your agreement to "Let it Not Happen Again," by making a donation today! Thank you for your support!
