Friends of the Amherst Senior Center

Meet Jane Doe, an 83 year old widow who lives alone in the modest home which she and her former husband occupied for 50 years. Although Jane does not have any close family members who live nearby, she is able to manage independently in large part due to the services provided by the Town of Amherst Senior Center. On a daily basis Jane goes to the Senior Center for lunch where she sits with friends and gets a nourishing meal. Since she no longer drives, the Elder Van picks her up and she is able to combine the excursion for lunch with another program at the Center at least 2 days each week. Over the years she has attended classes in Gentle Fitness for physical conditioning, New Options for mental stimulation and Seminars for learning opportunities. Since she lives on a limited income, the free or low cost classes make it possible for her to participate in activities that maintain her mental and physical health in addition to providing social pleasure. When Jane had surgery 3 years ago she contacted the Social Worker at the Senior Center who arranged to have her evening meals delivered until Jane was back on her feet. The Social Worker has also helped Jane to locate people who can help her with home maintenance problems and outdoor yard work.
