Pets like Poppet, a small terrier puppy abandoned in the woods on a cold snowy February have a second chance at life thanks to Friends of the Shelter.  Thrown from an ATV  by a cruel owner, Poppet was lucky to survive.  The man who witnessed this cruel act called the Bell County Animal Shelter to rescue the poor scrawny puppy whose legs were so bent that he couldn't walk or stand.  The Shelter staff named him Poppet and started to care for him, working with his legs to try to help him stand.  Friends of the Shelter provided his shots, and helped him get to a medical foster home where it was discovered that Poppet was crippled because he had been left in a cage so small that his legs couldn't straighten as he grew.  Once he was free to move he began to grow stronger, his legs straightened and today he is running normally in his new home.   Friends of the Shelter began in 2001 when a group of friends saw the need to promote animal welfare in Bell County. This is just one example of the many ways Friends of the Shelter assists animals at the Shelter as well as in the community. Friends of the Shelter has seen the adoption rate increase dramatically at the Shelter, with over 200 adoptions this year.  More than 1000 pets have gone to Rescues this year with the help of Friends of the Shelter, and the many transport groups we partner with. The euthansia rate at our shelter has dropped by 48 percent in the last year thanks to all the transports and adoptions.   Members spend countless hours helping animals in our community because they believe that animals deserve to be treated as humanely as possible. We provided 350 spay/neuter surgeries to low income owners this year through our Spay Neuter Assistance Program, and provided Kind News to second grade classrooms in our county to teach humane education.  Friends of the Shelter paid for all the vaccines and cat litter for the Bell County Animal Shelter as this is not included in the County shelter budget.  We also provide dog and cat food monthly to a local food giveaway for low income residents who need help feeding their pets.  Help us help pets in our communtiy by donating to Friends of the Shelter.  You can be a part of saving a life like Poppet's.
