Tree Pittsburgh

A nonprofit organization

Tree Pittsburgh (formerly Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest) is an environmental non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the City's vitality by protecting and restoring the urban forest through community tree maintenance, planting, education and advocacy.

Tree Tenders are Pittsburgh residents who care for young street trees throughout the City during Tree Care Days. Over 1,300 residents have graduated from the program since fall 2007. This special group of volunteer Tree Tenders are making a difference in Pittsburgh, planting trees and caring for existing ones--ensuring a healthy urban forest for generations to come.Tree Tenders take an 8 hour course led by local tree experts and receive instruction and education about urban forestry practices, tree biology and health, proper planting, pruning, and maintenance, and ultimately lead their communities in organizing tree plantings and tree care throughout Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Following completion of the course, Tree Tenders-in-Training participate in 8 volunteer hours (often at plantings in their neighborhoods) and hands-on Pruning Workshops.
