Organization Description
The Friends of the Weeks Public Library is a registered non-profit organization founded in 2007 to support the work and objectives of the Weeks Public Library, to supplement its resources, and enrich cultural opportunities for Greenland residents. The organizations’ officers include a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer, and membership is open to all residents with a nominal dues structure. All meetings are open to the public and the primary purpose is to raise funds and awareness for the library. A number of small fundraisers are held during the year as well as other projects. The group’s most recent focus is to support the needs of the library’s addition and expansion. In 2019, the group commenced a capital campaign among town residents, under the leadership of a professional fundraising consultant in order to maximize the return of this effort.
Mission Statement
The purpose of the Friends of the library is to organize interested individuals to support the objectives of the Weeks Public Library, to supplement its resources, and enrich cultural opportunities for Greenland residents.
Building Project
The library expansion project, approved by voters in March 2018, will provide residents with a modern, ADA compliant community space that can be used not only for reading and research, but also for meetings, after-school activities, interest groups, traveling exhibits and all kinds of programming. The desire of the public was to keep the library in its current location, just steps from Greenland Central School. Greenland is a community that supports early learning readiness and lifelong learning. The expansion will provide strong community-building benefits through access to the arts, culture, early learning, exploration, and life-long learning activities.
The expansion includes a dedicated conference room, a large meeting room that can be divided into two smaller rooms, a quiet reading area, an elevator, a small quiet study room, restrooms with changing tables, a children’s room, a teen space, a bank of computers, and open stacks for the adult collection.
Campaign Goal
Support the costs of the expansion and renovation as needed.
