Friends of CAPA

A nonprofit organization

The mission of Friends of CAPA is to support every student with the provisions needed to excel in the school's superior quality arts education experience. We encourage excellence and success in their personal development as artists and cultural leaders. Friends of CAPA works arduously to secure funding, resources, and materials needed to support our students, teachers, staff, and facilities in realizing the goals of our remarkable and culturally important school.

Pittsburgh CAPA 6-12 is the Pittsburgh Public School District's creative and performing arts school. Once admitted, students engage a challenging and integrated curriculum that provides world-class preparation for university study, and conservatory level preparation for artistic careers. During their seven-years of study at CAPA, students major in one of eight art forms: Dance, Instrumental Music, Literary Arts, Visual Arts, Theatre, Vocal Music, Production Technology, and Piano. CAPA students spend the better part of their day engaged academically in their major art form. Literary artists hone their writing, performing artists take the stage, musicians rehearse and compose, and production technology students construct and operate sets, sound, and lighting. Each unique art form requires a generous amount of support in order to optimize engagement and learning. Not only do these majors require regular acquisition of resources and upgrades, but our students further deepen their skills beyond the classroom in enrichment activities. These activities involve field trips to various performances and competitions. The procurement of funding for application, performance, and travel fees are onerous for our school and for many of our students who comprise a diverse representation of our city's socioeconomic composition. Friends of CAPA secures needed funding and resources to ensure that each student has equal access to resources needed for their major program.
