The Friends of Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, Inc. (Friends of KNWR) is an all-volunteer group. Every dollar you donate is used to help people experience beautiful, wild North Idaho.

We sponsor educational and/or recreational activities, programs, and volunteer opportunities at the refuge. We also offer a glimpse of the refuge via an EagleCam (see the stream at Although there has been a Canada goose on the nest, we are hopeful that a bald eagle pair will reclaim the nest. Meanwhile, the "gosling drop" was a very interesting sight.

Friends' projects include:

  • Bird Walks during spring and fall migration
  • Environmental education programs. Planned in 2016 are a live raptor program, an owl program, and others
  • Recreational/educational activities on the Refuge
  • Purchase of interpretive panels for the Auto Tour Route
  • Create and maintain the Pollinator Garden
  • Support Refuge-sponsored events like the KNWR 50th Anniversary and Eagle Release, waterfowl workshops and Women in the Outdoors workshops

We also work with the Refuge to offer volunteer opportunities at KNWR including installing a story trail, cleaning wood duck houses, and other maintenance and refuge enhancement projects.

KNWR is used by

  • 35,000 visitors annually
  • 220 bird species
  • 45 mammal species
  • 22 fish species
  • hundreds of plant and insect species

Help us help them. This pristine, multiple-use habitat in North Idaho is a valuable resource for our community and visitors. We invite you to visit the Refuge. Come during spring or fall migration to see thousands of birds.
