Funds raised through Midlands Gives will be used for one or more of our ongoing programs such as: the Shark Institute, Project Abby, Save the San Cristobal Island Tortoises, or the GEA Adventure Club.
The GEA Shark Institute continues field research led by Doctoral Candidate Bryan Keller investigating the migration of coastal sharks. This project will develop mitigation techniques to ensure coastal development will not create environmental havoc and hinder the potential energy market.
The Save the San Cristobal Island Tortoises Project is an effort to support and further the extraordinary work of the Cerro Colorado Tortoise Reserve on San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands. We hope to provide equipment for the Reserve supporting their efforts to rehabilitate one of the world's last remaining giant tortoise subspecies, Geochelone Chathamensis (the "San Cristobal Island tortoises")
Project Abby began in the spring of 2015. The project sought to shift the discussion on climate change from its focus on the extent of anthropogenic interference to nuanced multi-disciplinary understanding. Students in the Galapagos Islands spent time examining the best peer-reviewed science regarding what the island will look like in 2100. To bolster this scientific analysis, students conducted ethnographic interviews with local elders to determine how the climate had changed throughout their lifetime. Students then framed the predicted effect of climate change on the local environment relative to "Baby Abby," a theoretical child born in 2015. By humanizing the impact of an ever-evolving climate through interviews and the projected life of Abby, the project continues to engage individuals and policymakers in search of a lasting solution.
