Since its founding in 1912, Girl Scouts has offered remarkable opportunities for girls to develop positive values and to contribute to society as leaders, thinkers, and responsible citizens. Today, Girl Scouts remains a highly regarded, contemporary organization and a steadfast advocate for girls. Currently, Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania serves nearly 25,000 girls across our 27-county region.
Through Girl Scouts girls will:
• Have confidence in themselves and their abilities and form positive identities;
• Act ethically, honestly, and responsibly and show concern for others;
• Take appropriate risks, try things even if they might fail, and learn from mistakes;
• Develop and maintain healthy relationships and resolve conflicts constructively;
• Desire to contribute to the world in purposeful and meaningful ways, learns how to identify problems in the community and create "action plans" to solve them.
At Girl Scouts, we know this generation of girls deserves to lead tomorrow's boardrooms and courthouses and run our hospitals and technology start-ups. But she might not get there, unless we create the environment needed to support her. Girl Scouting is helping girls meet the challenges that face them today: developing healthy relationships, exploring new areas through STEM programming, and gaining new skills and experiences. Funding helps Girl Scouts provide program supplies, printing costs associated with curriculum, girl and volunteer recruitment activities, program evaluation, volunteer training and financial assistance for girls to help defray the cost of membership fees, program fees, and camp. Girl Scouting gives girls unique experiences-unavailable to them anywhere else. Your generous contribution goes directly to support our girls.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting.
Here is an excerpt from an interview with Katie DeCapria, Digital Marketing & eCommerce Coordinator at 4moms, and a 2004 Gold Award recipient:
"My Gold Award project was inspired by the cultural aftermath of 9/11. It was a very sensitive time in the country...and I had this urge to show people that we really aren't different. With the help of my friends and family, I secured four speakers, all of whom were religious leaders in major faiths...They all spoke to those similarities as well as provide a little education on their religions' history, culture, etc.
The goal of this project was to showcase how we're one world, all united by a need to be kind and open to one another. The more we know about one another, the more accepting we will be of one another."
