Founded in 1976, GALA Hispanic Theatre is the oldest and most established Latino arts organization in Washington, D.C.

GALA develops, produces, and presents works that explore the breadth of Latino performing arts, and in doing so, engages the entire community in an exchange of ideas and perspectives. Since its founding, GALA has produced over 180 plays and
musicals in Spanish and English, offered dance and music programs to a broad audience, and provided training and performance opportunities to hundreds of at-risk multicultural youth.

Annually, GALA produces four main stage productions, including an original musical, as well as presenting guest artist companies and special events. The Company uses projected surtitles to translate all live performances.

GALA also conducts a year-round arts education program, Paso Nuevo, for Latino and multicultural teens, offering opportunities for the students to write, produce, and perform their own original plays, explore their cultural identity, and build communication skills in Spanish and English. GALA’s student matinee programs for high schools introduces over 4,000 high school students to live Spanish language classical and contemporary theater, connecting Hispanic culture and dramaturgy to their curriculum, and our bilingual theater matinee programs for elementary school
students enhances language comprehension in both languages.

GALA has been recognized for its enormous contributions to the Hispanic arts. Among its awards and honors are the AT&T National Communications Public Humanities Award; Mayor's Arts Award for Artistic Excellence; and an award from the Latino Economic Development Corporation for outstanding Entrepreneurship and Community Engagement.
