Gapbuster Learning Center was founded in 1999 when Dr. Yvette Butler realized that inequities still existed in public schools between minorities and non-minorities and her daughter was tracked in the system. The program became as a home-based volunteer program to assist youth with math. By 2000, the program grew to over 37 students and school space was needed to continue the program. In October 2001, Dr. Butler incorporated the organization and filed for its non-profit status to obtain grants to sustain the program. Over the years the organization has grown to offer many different programs that service socio-ecomonmic disadvantaged and troubled youth. GapBuster Learning Center strives to raise the academic bar and close the learning gap for all students. We focus on the unique individuality of each student. We achieve this by assessing their current skills by building a dynamic program designed to enhance and motivate each student to learn at their potential. Our curriculum is aligned with the Montgomery County Public School (MCPS) curriculum. Our math component is designed to focus on the students’ math abilities with a strong interest in developing critical thinking skills, building a strong foundation of their basic facts, and mastering open ended questions. Our reading and writing component focus on the reading comprehension and basic writing skills. In addition, we offer our students a cultural-arts component with complements our program.
