Rudy shares how youth just like him benefit from positive healthy mentoring relationships.

"This weekend, I participated in an amazing camp.  We did a lot of fun activities such as high rope courses, rock climbing, and team building activities.  It wasn’t all fun and games though…we also did a lot of learning about how to better ourselves and communities.  Going into the camp, I was really hoping to learn more about what I can do to change things in my community.

There were many things that inspired me this weekend, but watching one of the adult allies get on the swing that takes you 60 feet in the air was the most inspiring.  She was so terrified to get on but she did after we (the youth) begged her.  She said she would do it but only if we promised to be brave for the rest of our lives.  That’s a promise I will keep for the rest of my life.  I will remember how people overcame their fears, some overcoming their fear of speaking in front of big crowds; some overcoming their fear of heights.  The biggest thing I will remember is that we all have a voice and the power to change anything, no matter what it is.

I want to bring bravery back to my community.  Bravery to all the younger kids that don’t believe that they matter.  To the people that think that they are alone.  Lastly, I want to bring bravery for people that think they are powerless.” – Rudy after attending leadership development camp.
