Georgia ForestWatch is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan, grassroots, membership organization founded in 1985 from a coalition of environmental groups. We work in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service to ensure the ecologically sound management of Georgia’s 867,000 acres of national forestland. Our mission is to enhance the health of Georgia’s national forest by protecting our forests and streams, advocating for natural processes, and identifying opportunities to improve forest management.

Over the years, we have seen significant success in our programming and advocacy. Our efforts have resulted in halting clear cuts of the Chattahoochee National Forest; identifying and preserving old-growth forest land that was previously unrecorded; monitoring, improving, and reducing ill-advised Forest Service Projects; as well as engaging community members in our mission through our programming and education endeavors.

We see a future where all can enjoy forests that have reached their full majesty, where intact natural processes support healthy ecosystems and thriving biodiversity, and clean streams supply water to millions of Georgians. We believe this future requires the protection and appreciation of Georgia’s National Forests, and the watersheds, native plants, and wildlife they encompass. It is for this reason that GAFW exists and works to engage Georgia’s citizens in protecting and advocating on behalf of their National Forests.

We invite you to join us on a hike or at an educational event! Visit our website to learn more about our upcoming activities: http://www.gafw.org
