Stay Local

Georgia Organics connects Georgia families to organic food from Georgia farms, while providing organic farmers with direct services like business planning, organic certification assistance, and restaurant sales support.

We also work to educate kids on healthy food in their cafeterias and classrooms, help communities solve their own food access issues through Georgia Food Oasis, and provide online educational opportunities through Good Food for Thought.

The end of this difficult year is near, so we are asking you to #StayLocal, by doing two things:

  1. Consider keeping your charitable dollars in Georgia with a year-end contribution to Georgia Organics, which will go toward supporting local and organic farmers working to feed their individual communities across our state.
  2. Please buy from those farmers directly where possible. Consistently shop at your local farmers market, and visit gfg.georgiaorganics.org to browse a selection of our farmer members who offer direct purchasing options through CSA subscriptions and online purchasing.

This has been a year of resilience and adaptation for all of us as we’ve tried to stay safe and healthy during the global COVID-19 pandemic. In this vein, we have prioritized support for farmers and communities through five initiatives:

  • Food Fight GA spent almost $250,000 with local farmers - $102,000 with BIPOC farmers - to provide close to 6,500 produce boxes to restaurant workers whose jobs were impacted by the pandemic;
  • The Farmer Fund gave $1,000 each to 71 farmers – 45 BIPOC – for emergency COVID support;
  • Our Farm to School program designed and shared interactive resources for schools and parents through the Turnip the Volume campaign for October Farm to School month;
  • We launched our mid-week pop-up market in partnership with the Wrecking Bar in Atlanta to give eight Georgia farmers an additional place to sell direct-to-consumer. More than 230 unique customers purchased from this market;
  • And through Georgia Food Oasis, we provided $26,000 through 11 mini-grants to support communities working to solve their own pandemic-based food access issues.

We have worked to stay nimble as we re-envisioned our work to go deeper on impacting farmer prosperity for organic, sustainable, and regenerative farmers across Georgia. The best way we can all accomplish both of these critical initiatives moving forward is to #staylocal and support our local farmers and our local nonprofits.
