Girl Scouts of Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho

Below are three stories of how we are building girls of courage, confidence and character.

Rachel has been very active in her school with sports and student council. Needless to say she has a very big social circle, and has not had a hard time making friends. Stacie, on the other hand, had been having a hard time with some of the girls at her school. She was teased a lot about her hair and her clothing. Stacie’s mother has been searching for an outlet to make friends outside her school. Stacie’s very first troop meeting, was a planning of Hands on Science activities for a grossology event. The other girls were stuck, and were having a hard time coming up with ideas. Luckily Stacie is VERY good in science and had ten ideas for some great science experiments!  All the girls were impressed and excited about implementing the ideas at the grossology event. Stacie’s mother called the troop leader later on that same week and stated how excited Stacie was about Girl Scouts.  Stacie’s mother also told the troop leader about an incident at school - Stacie had been leaving class, and a group of girls were beginning to tease Stacie when Rachel stepped in and told the bulling girls " hey that’s my friend!" and told Stacie " see you next Monday!" Stacie’s mother said although the troop girls don't hang out together at school, Stacie said they now say hi or stop to chat for a minute in the halls. Stacie has also not been teased since Rachel spoke up.

Thanks to Girl Scouts, one of the girls in our junior troop has developed a new talent!  New to Girl Scouts, Kacie had never been to the cookie rally before this year.  When she saw the cadette's amazing performance with the hula hoop, she thought it might be a fun thing to try.  So, within a week, she taught herself this skill, then later tried out, and GOT INTO, her school talent show!  I saw her do some of her tricks at one of our booth sales recently and got a real kick out of her!  I have touted Kacie's story to many people over these last few months as yet another reason why I love the Girl Scout organization!

Service Unit 402 in Sandpoint, Idaho: We held our 2nd Annual food drive with the food bank, and brought in 2,026lbs of food!  We stood out in front of the 4 grocery stores (Saturday and Sunday) in Sandpoint and asked for donations.  The local food bank is feeding 4,500 plus people every month (the population of Sandpoint is 6,800 people) the food bank serves the whole county, but puts it into perspective how many they are feeding for such a small community, the numbers have gone up significantly that they are helping now.  The girls and adults felt really good on helping their local community.
