Girl Scout troops have traditionally been led by volunteers – most commonly parent volunteers. What happens when a girl wants to register for Girl Scouts and lives in a community where there is a lack of available volunteers? Prior to 2018, the options for these girls were limited to one-day or short-term programs or being placed on a waitlist. To address this education and mentorship need within specific Iowa communities, Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI) developed the Community Troop Program as an option for girls who live in communities with a lack of adult volunteers.

Through the Community Troop Program, GSGI staff members lead year-round Girl Scout troops in communities with an identified mentorship need. From camping to selling cookies to doing science experiments with sticky slime – girls in the Community Troop Program enjoy the full Girl Scout experience.

After three successful years of the Community Troop Program, there are still pockets of the Des Moines community with a Girl Scout waitlist and identified mentorship need. With your support, this project will serve an additional 300 girls per year – girls who otherwise would not have the opportunity to join Girl Scouts. We will hire an additional staff member to lead three new troops in partnership with schools and nonprofits, including Des Moines area youth/family shelters and organizations serving historically low socio-economic neighborhoods. The new team member will also lead community outreach efforts, including short term (6-8 week) outreach programs with schools and nonprofit partners.

Over the course of five years, we expect to serve 1,500 girls through this project.  However, the impact of your support cannot be measured by numbers alone. The lessons learned and relationships formed through Girl Scout programs are experiences girls carry with them long after their time as a Girl Scout ends. High quality educational and mentorship programs are essential in equipping girls with the leadership skills to empower themselves for life.

Every dollar raised through the A Community Thrives Challenge will support the expansion of Girl Scout outreach programs!

Every year hundreds of Des Moines, IA area girls who want to join Girl Scouts will be added to a waitlist.  YOUR SUPPORT TODAY will move girls off the waitlist and into the Girl Scout experience they deserve.
