Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa (GSGI) is committed to the safety of our programs, members, and operations. Now, more than ever, we are faced with safety and security concerns for our community and world. At Girl Scouts we proactively make enhancements to safety and security critical needs, and our camps are no exception.

GSGI maintains two resident Girl Scout camps – Camp Sacajawea in Boone and Camp Tanglefoot on Clear Lake. Both camps have seen decades of Girl Scout activity; including hosting more than 2,000 campers this summer alone! Safety and security upgrades are necessary so girls can continue enjoying life-changing camp experiences. Many of our most popular and most impactful camp sessions (horseback riding, ropes courses, archery, and water-based activities) require specialized equipment to ensure girls’ safety at camp. This includes helmets to fit every hair type and life vests for all shapes and sizes.) First-Aid and emergency supplies are necessary, as well as enhanced security measures to keep our campers and property safe.

When girls have a quality camp experience, they have a powerful opportunity to learn lessons in community, character-building, skill development, and healthy living. Because the experiences are engaging and participatory, it is a deeply meaningful experience that cannot be matched.

Camp life is synonymous with community life, in that it creates a space where kids learn and grow together. They are broadening their experiences as they practice daily tasks that teach them to develop social, emotional, physical, and cognitive skills. Since they are doing this outside of their home, they are challenged to apply what they know in a new context, teaching them adaptability and to work together.

At camp, everyone is given the same opportunities, regardless of race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic group. Girl Scouts provides free membership to ensure there are no barriers to the leadership experience. Additionally, there are camp scholarships available for girls who are in financial need.

Our safety and security enhancement project will ensure girls feel safe, secure and comfortable at camp.

Girls will have size appropriate gear that will keep them safe while they are taking part in adventurous camp activities. At camps and leadership centers, they will have access to updated first aid kits and AED defibrillators. Finally, security cameras and systems will be in place for added protection.

A Girl Scout camp experience can be life-changing. Not only does it provide a community for girls to explore and create friendships, but it also pushes them outside their comfort zones to adventure in the outdoors. Girl Scout camp programs are essential in equipping girls with opportunities and leadership skills to empower themselves for life. Make a difference today!
