GLMPI Girls Like Me Project believes that although African-American girls are disproportionately targeted by devaluing stereotypes and media messages of misogyny, self-hate, and destructive behavior that adversely normalizes circumstances of poverty and violence, a strong sense of self-efficacy and awareness can transform them into change agents for social good.
The mission of GLMPI is to help African-American girls ages 11-17 critically examine social, cultural, and political ideologies in media, so that they will be able to overcome stigmas and negative stereotypes. We equip them with the tools and strategies to become influential, independent digital storytellers who transform their communities and foster global sisterhood.
Our methodology implements the 3E approach to our programming; the focus is on Exposure, Examination and Engagement. Our programming is executed via workshops, group mentoring, excursions, film screenings, career shadowing and apprenticeships. Core programming is our Digitally Innovative Voices of Advocacy Sisters (D.I.V.A.S) which consists of podcasting and talk show platforms that are produced and hosted by girls. Additionally, we host two annual events Chicago Day of the Girl and Pampered Power Talks that have served over 1000 in the Chicagoland area since 2012.
In the Fall of 2017, GLMPI launched its Global Connections program and campaign to sponsor global travel experience for two teen girls. In the Fall of 2018, GLMPI expanded to after school incorporating digital technology and cultural exchange between girls in our program and those in selected countries.
