Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society

Every day, scared and abandoned animals come through our doors, hoping for a second chance. Right now, many of them wait in outdated, worn-down kennels that don't reflect the love and care we want to give them.

That's why we are raising funds to install safe, comforting, beautifully crafted kennels where our dogs can rest, heal, and feel at home while they wait for their forever families.

It has been proven that people are more likely to adopt dogs that are clean, look healthy, and are housed in a location that is also clean and inviting. We've selected Gator Kennels, which do not have the traditional chain-link or welded wire that most people associate with "the pound" or old-school rescue facilities.

The materials used in Gator Kennels are naturally antimicrobial, easy to clean and cut down on noise, helping to reduce stress in the dogs and make our facility more comfortable for everyone.

Founded in 1912, the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society (GMHS) is a nonprofit animal shelter dedicated to celebrating the human-animal bond and ensuring the welfare of every pet in its care. Each year, GMHS transforms the lives of more than 8,000 animals through sheltering, compassionate medical care, adoption services, and community education programs in rural Coastal Virginia.

Who We Are

GMHS was started in 1912 to protect animals. GMHS serves Gloucester, Mathews and Middlesex counties and is located at 6620 Jackson Lane, Gloucester VA 23061.

GMHS services the Gloucester, Mathews, and Middlesex counties. Only a small percentage of the Society's operating funds come from these counties; the rest comes from fundraising efforts by volunteers, grants, and other sources.

Our objectives are to:
- Be a beacon in animal adoption, welfare, and
advocacy.
- Provide care for stray and homeless animals.
- Be a driving force for animal education.
- Develop a culture of collaboration and
service.
- Ensure financial sustainability
