First, Utah County does not have any emergency or transitional housing for those who find themselves homeless. I realize that sounds unbelievable, it is the facts. Salt Lake County has 5 different housing solutions for the homeless; some have as many as 200+ beds. Secondly, Golden Spike Outreach (GSO) – Re-Entry Assistance Program (REAP) primarily provides assistance to those who have found themselves placed into the Utah Correction System due to being homeless prior to being committed to jail or prison. I have to many say “When it is cold outside and you are homeless going to jail is not all that bad even if you have to commit a crime to get there.” Thirdly, the drug issues of many of this population are very high. It could be said that over 85% of the people in Utah County Jail are there due to drug related issues. Unfortunately a very high percentage of those dealing with drug issues got on drugs because of not understanding the dangers of prescription pain pills.
