New mats for Gracie Judo!

Gracie Judo has been a place for children, young people, and adults to develop strong, healthy minds and bodies through training in Kodokan Judo for almost 15 years. Led by Olympian champion, Grace Jividen-Truesdale, this club is a family... and a big family!  We often see two generations on the mat: children, siblings, and parents sharing the love for a good workout and the guidance and support of our amazing Sensei. "Judo is a life-sharing, cultural experience," says Jividen-Truesdale as she generously shares her unique talents with the community.

Our rigorous practice is aligned with a passion for service and deep attention to the socioemotional development of the children and the young people in our dojo. Judo remains the most courteous and respectful sport in existence today. The etiquette of bowing demonstrates and reinforces the judo principle of “mutual respect”. Our students are taught self-control, courtesy, and respect for others, with particular emphasis on the value of making good moral choices. Their development is supported on the mat and in their personal lives as they navigate school and social pressures. Our Sensei visits schools to do demonstrations and encourage kids to reflect on the values of good mental and physical health through excellence in sports and behavior. Gracie always says “where the head goes, the body goes” referring to a throw on the mat and the choices made in everyday life.

Grace's journey has taken her a long way.  In addition to her success in elite judo, in 2019, Gracie Judo opened a nonprofit to align with the mission of service and community engagement. She has taught over 800 children in her career. Gracie Judo USA is the most affordable and accessible martial arts studio in the South Jefferson County area, offering financial aid to over 50% of students. We have a diverse group of students with different ethnic and socioeconomical backgrounds. The income generated through membership pays just enough to cover rental and utilities. Our sensei are volunteers, while parents support the organization by cleaning, fundraising, and organizing family activities (holidays events, tournaments, etc.).

This year, we are raising funds to buy new mats. Mats provide a cushioned landing place for the kids and adults to practice judo safely. High quality mats are a big investment, but they last a decade. The dojo mats will cost $20,000 without installation (which will be done by parent volunteers). We need your help to ensure that kids can continue playing and learning.
