Great Explorations Children’s Museum was co-founded in 1986 by the Junior League of St. Petersburg and Hands-On! Inc. to provide unique educational programming and learning for children and families that spark children’s discovery of their world through immersive play and learning experiences. The museum has grown to serve over 200,000 children and families annually through museum visits, educational programs, traveling exhibits and community outreach events in at-need areas. It is through the generosity of our community partners that we are able to provide over $750,000 in documented services to the community each year. We are constantly evolving in order to fulfill the needs of the youth in our community and improve our educational programming to reach targeted populations that require the benefits of early education as the stepping stones for success later in life.  In 2014, Great Explorations received accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums, the highest honor for a museum. Accreditation is based on whether a museum has achieved core standards of excellence which include being a museum for all, offering opportunities for diverse participation and operating in a fiscally responsible manner that promotes long-term sustainability. There are over 17,000 museums in the U.S., and only 1,072 are accredited. Of those 1,072 museums, only 12 are children’s museums. We are honored to be listed among other accredited institutions such as the Smithsonian, the National Gallery of Art, and our local Dali Museum.
