Formed in 1952, the Greater Akron Musical Association enriches the lives of audiences, musicians, and our community through exceptional symphonic music, and meaningful, collaborative and educational programming that welcomes, connects, and engages a broad and diverse regional community. GAMA’s mission is realized through the operation of the Akron Symphony Orchestra, Akron Youth Symphony and Philharmonic, Akron Symphony Chorus, and offering numerous special outreach and education programs. It is the only professional ensemble of its nature in the Greater Akron area. During a typical season, more than 100,000 individuals—including approximately 8,000 young people—experience the work of GAMA through concerts, educational programs, and radio broadcasts.
Despite the many challenges we all face this year, the Akron Symphony is harnessing our resilience as an organization to learn and evolve, forging a strong path toward our future. The 2020-21 Interlude Season is our most innovative and adaptive season to date. While full-scale, live orchestral performances are not yet possible, we are steadfastly committed to inspiring our community with music and supporting our artists. The Interlude Season was designed to be our gift to you, in appreciation for the decades of support the Northeast Ohio community has provided to us. In order to allow for the greatest level of accessibility for all, every Interlude Season experience will be provided free of charge. Furthermore, each of our performances and educational offerings will be in response to the immediate needs of our community: We Are Listening.
The first two months of the Interlude Season performances have included chamber music at the Akron Canton Food Bank, Summa Health, Hale Farm & Village, Summit County Historical Society, and Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens; virtual content including our “ASO From Home” performances and opportunities to meet our musicians in ASO Conversations and TalkBacks; and digital education offerings including videos for our annual Link Up program for 3rd – 5th graders in Akron. The Akron Youth Symphony is underway with online masterclasses and instruction, and both our Gospel Meets Symphony Chorus and Akron Symphony Chorus are meeting virtually to continue pursuing music together.
The ASO is committed to fostering an inclusive environment reflected in our people, inherent in our decisions, visible in our actions, and evident in our practices. By examining past practices and cultivating future goals, our new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEI) is now an integral participant and long-term advocate for furthering our mission.
Your support is needed this year more than ever before. A recent study by SMU Data Arts estimates a -$6.8 billion net effect of the COVID-19 crisis on the nonprofit arts and culture sector over the course of the year. Your gift to the Akron Symphony will directly support our Interlude Season while also helping us continue to make plans for a safe return to live full orchestra events.
Please join us as we continue creating unique and captivating ways to bring the community together through music well into the future!
